Protecting the heritage of Harris Tweed
Accepting of the bill in the 1993 caused an appearance of a new legislative, Harris Tweed Authority, which replaced Harris Tweed Association, that was created in the 1909. The main task of the organization was to keep and develop standards and renommee of the world-famed brand Harris Tweed.
Harris Tweed Authority controls production and testing of the fabrics from the beginning to the end, and when it makes sure, that the material deserves the name Harris Tweed, it marks the material with the brand logotype.
The logotype guarantees the high quality of tweed, which is spun and dyed by hand on the Shetland Islands.
The bill of the 1993 defines, that the production spun by hand by residents of the islands Outer Hebrides of wool which is gathered and dyed on the same islands only can be called Harris Tweed. In whole, the Bill secures the preservation of the name, quality and reputation of the brand Harris Tweed and guarantees, that every meter of the fabric corresponds to the accepted standards.
